Crackdown on Unlicensed Limousine Companies
A Rhode Island Limo Operator recently had his companies shut down by the Motor Carrier Division of the PUC, for failing to carry the state mandated operating authority and liability coverage of 1.5 million for each vehicle in his fleet.

In Virginia, the Public continues to be warned against contracting companies without proper license and insurance. The Commonwealth's Department of Motor Vehicle's website http://www.dmvnow.com has created a page for the public, containing the names of companies that are authorized to operate vehicles for hire in the State.

These recent events will hopefully encourage other state and city agencies to start cracking down on the many unauthorized operators that continue to benefit from the lack of enforcement of their local area's regulations. Many of the Limo Companies that do abide by the rules are suffering loss year after year, or simply breaking even. It is impossible to compete with unauthorized carriers that can afford to charge their clients substantially less fees.

Limo Companies need to become more involved in forcing their local regulatory agencies to make it more difficult for these unauthorized carriers to do business. If everyone works together, they can put the pressure on their local agencies, particularly their local police departments. There needs to be more manpower to enforce the rules and stricter penalties for non-conformers.

Another way to put these unauthorized companies out of business is to educate the consumers to ask for License & Insurance verification prior to contracting a Limo Carrier for their event. One simple method to differentiate your company from your unauthorized competitor is to put your Federal/State License Number(s) on your website and post a warning to consumers about contracting an unauthorized carrier.
